The word 'physics' was coined from the (ancient) Greek word 'phusike' which means "the knowledge of nature." The main aim or basics of this branch of science is simply to understand the principles that govern the universe (the physical world around us). This may include:
- understanding what causes bodies to move,
- understanding what causes a moving body to stop,
- understanding why bodies are so reluctant to change their state of motion (inertia),
- understanding why we feel the heat of the sun though its millions of miles away,
- understanding why sharp and pointed objects pierce the body more easily than blunt ones, etc.
This study covers virtually any physical action that you may think of right now, so friend its not that weird as assumed by freshers or sophomores or new students entering physics class for the first time. Physics is one of the oldest disciplines in the world, unlike other courses it has no definite boundary it intersects with many other science courses like Biology e.g in Biophysics, Chemistry e.g in Quantum chemistry, Geography e.g in Astronomy...
The study of physics requires a lot of theories, it is these theories that often leads to practical proofs and eventually they become scientific laws. So in order to be a good science (physics) student you must be observant with what happens around you be ever ready to ask questions as they occur because a lot of things only happen once in a thousand years and only seen by a selected few "lucky" people in a particular locality, at a particular time (because the earth is sperical). so if you're lucky enough to see something you can't explain or seen before, remember to ask the big question WHY!
